The main character and her love interest both, similarly, deserved to be delved into, given starker, more obvious personalities. Hur deals with a large fusion of complex themes, from family ties to revenge, and all of these are explored well but not explored enough, in my opinion. The Red Palace follows a palace nurse desperate to solve a mystery for which her mentor is accused she teams up with a cop to find out who killed three innocent women, and this mystery leads her deeper into a treacherous web of power and lies. To be clear, I dearly wish this book had more of what I was expecting, based on its 5-star reviews: a faster pace, more memorable characters, a tenser mystery. The mystery is second place, in my opinion, to the atmosphere, bolstered by the heady, velvet feeling of Hur's writing. From the first chapter, June Hur tugs the reader into a world lush with blood, weapons, and secrets, a gorgeous, twisted version of ancient Korea. I've heard THE RED PALACE described as a mix between an atmospheric murder mystery and a romantic, slow-paced k-drama-a description with which I fully agree. ![]()
